Cocoa Mug {Marshmallow} Pops/Stirrers

I just had to share. My daughter and I are making them this weekend! These little mugs of hot cocoa on a stick are a really adorable addition to the holiday season. They are super easy to make, using only marshmallows and some melted chocolate or frosting and decorated with sprinkles. You can eat them off of the stick, or even stir them into your hot cocoa!

You will need
  • popsicle sticks/craft sticks
  • marshmallows
  • melted chocolate or chocolate frosting
  • white jimmie sprinkles for the mini marshmallows (optional)
  • vanilla frosting for the whipped cream swirl dusted with cocoa powder (optional)
  • festive confetti to decorate your marshmallow mugs.

Directions

Push the Popsicle sticks through the flat bottom of the marshmallow.

Create the handles for your mug by cutting a marshmallow into 4 slices. Cut each slice in half and cut out the center, creating a “C” shape as shown below.

Using the stickiness of the marshmallow handle, push them on to the sides of your marshmallow mugs. You may need to make a little hole on the side of the mug to push the handle into if they are not sticking on their own.

Using melted chocolate or chocolate frosting, add your “cocoa” to the tops of your mug, making sure to leave a rim around the edge of the top of the marshmallow.

Break up white jimmie sprinkles to resemble little marshmallows and place on top of your chocolate.

Alternatively, you can create a swirl of “whipped cream” out of vanilla frosting, using a small star tip. I used Wilton tip #18. Sprinkle cocoa powder on top if desired.

You can add some sprinkles to create a little holiday design on my mugs, and used peppermint candy can sprinkles to put on top. You can also use edible markers to draw a design on your mugs, or leave them white.


You can eat them off the stick or stir them into your cocoa for a marshmallow-ey swirl!

Hot Cocoa Mix Recipe:

The secret ingredient in this mix is the mini chocolate chips, which melt when combined with the boiling water and give the cocoa an extra-rich flavor. The recipe makes enough for four gift-size portions, each of which can be measured into a small plastic bag and tucked into a cup or mug filled with mini marshmallows, candy stick stirrers, and a spoon. Wrap each filled gift cup in cellophane and don’t forget to include a tag with the following instructions: “Spoon 3 or 4 generous tablespoons of cocoa mix into your cup (depending on the size), add boiling water, and stir well.”

Ingredients
  • 2 cups non-fat dry milk powder
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
Instructions
  1. Measure all the ingredients into a mixing bowl and whisk them until they are evenly blended.
  2. Store the mix in a tightly covered container at room temperature until you’re ready to package it. Makes about 4 cups of mix.
